A river is a natural flowing stream of water that is essential to humans in many ways. They provide a source of drinking water, for obtaining food, to fertilize lands. They provide habitat to wildlife. Major important rivers of the world are:

<ol>
	<li>Nile: The Nile is the longest river in the world. The Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile. The Nile was also an important part of ancient Egyptian spiritual life.</li>
	<li>Amazon River: Amazon River is the second-longest river in the world. The Amazon is the largest river in the world by volume. The Amazon River has the largest species of river dolphin (grow up to 2.6m)</li>
	<li>Yangtze River: It is the third-longest river in the world & an important river of China. One of the dams on the river, the Three Gorges Dam, is the largest hydro-electric power station in the world.</li>
	<li>Ganges: It is considered a holy river by Hindus and worshiped as the goddess Ganga in Hinduism. It originates in the western Himalayas in India and drains into the Sunderbans delta in the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges is such an important river it has been declared India’s National River </li>
	<li>Mekong River: It is the 12th longest river in the world & is difficult to navigate. The Mekong basin is one of the richest areas of biodiversity in the world.</li>
	<li>Mississippi River: It is the largest river system in the United States and North America & is about 2,320 miles long. Cotton, timber and food were transported down the river. It gives electricity and water to many people around the United States, all without polluting our planet.</li>
</ol>

<h2 id="content-id-1932-1">Lakes</h2>

Lake is a surface water body which is surrounded by land. They are found in various landscapes like Hilly areas, plains, plateaus, rift zones, etc.

Important Lakes of India:

Sambhar Lake – Rajasthan: It is India’s largest inland salt lake. It is known that the Sambhar Lake is a part of the kingdom of the demon king Brishparva.

Kolleru Lake – Andhra Pradesh: It is the largest lake in India. It is located between Krishna and Godavari delta. It was declared a wetland of international importance in 2002.

Pulicat Lake- Andhra Pradesh: It is the second-largest brackish – water lake or lagoon in India. The large spindle shaped barrier island named Sriharikota separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal.

Loktak Lake -Manipur: It is the largest freshwater lake in North -East India. Keibul Lamjao is the only floating national park in the world that floats over it.

Vembanad Lake -Kerala: It is the longest lake in India, and the largest lake in the state of Kerala. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is conducted in a portion of the lake.

Chilka Lake -Odisha: It is the largest coastal lagoon in India and the second largest lagoon in the world. It is the largest wintering ground for migratory birds on the Indian subcontinent.

<h2 id="content-id-1932-2">Waterfalls</h2>

They are also called cascades. It is defined as an area where water flows over a steep drop in the course of a stream or river.

Important Waterfalls: 

Kunchikal Falls: It is India’s highest waterfall & ranks 116 in height in the world. The total height of the fall is 1493 ft. The fall is created by the Varahi River.

Jog Falls: It was declared as one of the UNESCO ecological hotspots in the world. It is the Second highest plunge in India. The height of Jog falls is 800 ft. & is created by the river Sharavathi.

Dudhsagar Fall: It is also known as the “Sea of Milk”. It ranks 227th in the world. The height of this fall is 1,020 ft.

Niagara Falls: These falls are created by the Niagara River. The total height of these falls is 167 ft and is located on the border of Ontario and New York, America.

Victoria Falls: The other name of the fall is Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning” the smoke that thunder”. The height of the fall is 355 ft. They create the biggest curtain of falling water in the world and it is also one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

Angel Falls: It is the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall, with a height of 3,211 feet & located in Venezuela.

Iguazu Falls: These falls are the longest waterfall system in the world. It is created by the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine. The falls divide the river into the upper and lower iguazu.
