HIV spreads through specific bodily fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk, and rectal fluids. Common modes of transmission include unprotected sexual contact, sharing contaminated needles, transfusion of infected blood, and transmission from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Importantly, HIV does not spread through casual contact such as touching, sharing food, or using the same utensils, a fact that is often misunderstood and has contributed to social stigma.
Although there is no permanent cure for AIDS, medical science has made significant progress in managing the disease. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) can effectively control the virus, allowing individuals with HIV to live long and productive lives. Prevention strategies focus on awareness, safe sexual practices, regular testing, use of sterile needles, and timely medical intervention. Thus, AIDS has evolved from being viewed as a fatal disease to a manageable chronic condition when detected early and treated appropriately.
