One clear night, Riya stood on the roof with her grandfather and looked at the sky. She saw the moon shining and many tiny bright objects around it. Grandfather said that the sun, the moon and all those objects seen in the sky are called celestial bodies. Some celestial bodies have their own heat and light. They are called stars. The sun is also a star.

Riya then noticed that some stars seemed to form different patterns. Grandfather explained that these groups of stars are called constellations. One famous constellation is Ursa Major or Big Bear. A part of it is known as Saptarishi. In ancient times, people used stars to find directions at night. The Pole Star shows the north direction and remains in the same position in the sky.

Riya asked, "If the sun is a star, what is the earth?" Grandfather said that some celestial bodies do not have their own heat and light. They get light from stars. Such bodies are called planets. The earth is a planet. It gets heat and light from the sun. It is one of the eight planets of the solar system. The moon is the earth's satellite because it moves around the earth.

He then told her that the solar system consists of the sun, the eight planets, satellites and some other celestial bodies. The sun is at the centre of the solar system. It is huge and made up of extremely hot gases. It provides the pulling force that binds the solar system. It is the main source of heat and light. The sun is about 150 million kilometres away from the earth.

Grandfather named the planets in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These planets move around the sun in fixed paths called orbits. The planets also move around their own axis. Mercury is the nearest planet to the sun. Venus is considered the earth's twin because its size and shape are almost the same as that of the earth.

Then grandfather spoke specially about the earth. The earth is the third nearest planet to the sun. It is the fifth largest planet. It is slightly flattened at the poles. Therefore, its shape is described as a geoid. The earth is called a unique planet because conditions favourable to support life are found only on this planet. It is neither too hot nor too cold. It has water and air. The air has life-supporting gases like oxygen. Because two-thirds of the earth is covered with water, it looks blue from outer space. So, it is called the blue planet.

The moon is the earth's only natural satellite. It is much smaller than the earth. It is about 3,84,400 km away from us. It takes about 27 days to complete one round of the earth. It also takes the same time to complete one spin. That is why we see only one side of the moon.

At the end, grandfather pointed to the sky and told Riya that our solar system is a part of the Milky Way galaxy, also called Akash Ganga. A galaxy is a huge system of billions of stars, and millions of such galaxies make the Universe.
