You have to decide whether the data provided in the statements are sufficient to answer the question.
<h2 id="content-id-6415703928-4"><b>Question On Data Sufficiency </b></h2>Two inlet pipes M and N are used to fill a water cistern. Pipe M fills the cistern at a constant rate of x units per hour, and Pipe N fills it at a constant rate of (x + 8) units per hour. The cistern is also equipped with a drainage leak L at the bottom that empties the water at a constant rate of y units per hour. What is the total capacity of the cistern?

Statement I: When Pipe M and Pipe N work together while the leak L is completely sealed, they can fill the empty cistern in 10 hours. However, if the leak L is wide open and all three pipe operate simultaneously, it takes exactly 14 hours to fill the empty cistern completely.

Statement II: If the cistern is completely empty and Pipe M alone operates for 14 hours, followed immediately by Pipe N alone operating for 7 hours, the cistern gets filled to its maximum capacity.

</li></ol> <h2 id="content-id-6794350821-6"><b> Data Sufficiency Questions Solution</b></h2><p>The correct answer is <strong>option 3</strong> i.e. <strong>Both statements together are sufficient</strong>.</p>

<p>Let total capacity of cistern = C units</p>

<p>Efficiency of M = x units/hour</p>

<p>Efficiency of N = (x + 8) units/hour</p>

<p>Efficiency of leak L = y units/hour</p>

<p><strong>From Statement I</strong></p>

<p>M + N fill the cistern in 10 hours</p>

<p>⇒ x + (x + 8) = C/10</p>

<p>2x + 8 = C/10     ...(1)</p>

<p>When leak is open:</p>

<p>M + N − L fill the cistern in 14 hours</p>

<p>⇒ 2x + 8 − y = C/14     ...(2)</p>

<p>Statement I gives relation among C, x, and y, but values are not fixed.</p>

<p>So, Statement I alone is <strong>not sufficient</strong>.</p>

<p><strong>From Statement II</strong></p>

<p>M works for 14 hours</p>

<p>⇒ Filled water = 14x</p>

<p>N works for 7 hours</p>

<p>⇒ Filled water = 7(x + 8)</p>

<p>Total capacity:</p>

<p>C = 14x + 7(x + 8)</p>

<p>C = 21x + 56</p>

<p>x is unknown.</p>

<p>So, Statement II alone is <strong>not sufficient</strong>.</p>

<p><strong>Using Statement I and II together</strong></p>

<p>From Statement I:</p>

<p>2x + 8 = C/10</p>

<p>⇒ C = 10(2x + 8)</p>

<p>C = 20x + 80     ...(3)</p>

<p>From Statement II:</p>

<p>C = 21x + 56     ...(4)</p>

<p>Equating (3) and (4):</p>

<p>20x + 80 = 21x + 56</p>

<p>x = 24</p>

<p>Now substitute in (3):</p>

<p>C = 20(24) + 80</p>

<p>C = 480 + 80</p>

<p>C = 560 units</p>

<p>So, Both statements together are sufficient.</p>
