Quantity I: A trader sells an article at a 20% profit. Had he purchased it for 10% less and sold it for â&#130;¹120 less, he would have earned a 25% profit. Find the original cost price.

Quantity II: A shopkeeper marks an article 50% above its cost price and gives two successive discounts of 20% and 10%. If the selling price is â&#130;¹3,240, find the cost price.

<p>Let the original cost price of the article be â&#130;¹x.</p>

<p>Since the trader sells the article at a 20% profit, the original selling price is = 120% of x<br>
= 1.2x</p>

<p>Had he purchased the article for 10% less, the new cost price would be = 90% of x<br>
= 0.9x</p>

<p>In this case, he would earn a 25% profit. Therefore, the new selling price would be</p>

<p>= 125% of 0.9x = 1.125x</p>

<p>According to the question, this selling price is â&#130;¹120 less than the original selling price.</p>

<p>1.125x = 1.2x - 120</p>

<p>0.075x = 120</p>

<p>x = 1600</p>

<p>Therefore, Quantity I = â&#130;¹1,600</p>

<p>Quantity II:</p>

<p>Let the cost price of the article be â&#130;¹x.</p>

<p>The marked price is 50% above the cost price.</p>

<p>Marked Price = 150% of x = 1.5x</p>

<p>After a discount of 20%, the price becomes = 80% of 1.5x = 1.2x</p>

<p>A further discount of 10% is given. Therefore, the selling price becomes</p>

<p>= 90% of 1.2x = 1.08x</p>

<p>According to the question:</p>

<p>1.08x = 3240</p>

<p>x = 3000</p>

<p>Therefore, Quantity II = â&#130;¹3,000</p>
