Decide whether the information given in the statements is sufficient to answer the question.

Train P is 300 m long and travels at a speed of Y km/h. Train Q is L m long and travels at a speed of (Y − 18) km/h. What is the time taken by Train Q to completely cross a platform of length 175 m?

Statement I: Train P and Train Q completely cross each other in 100 seconds while travelling in the same direction.

Statement II: Train R is 25% longer than Train Q and its speed is 20% more than the speed of Train Q. Train R completely crosses a platform of length (L/2 + 25) m in 15 seconds.

</li><li><p>Both Statement I and Statement II together are sufficient, but neither statement alone is sufficient.</p>
</li><li><p>Either Statement I or Statement II alone is sufficient.</p>
</li><li><p>Even both statements together are not sufficient.</p>
</li></ol> <h2 id="content-id-8590167432-5"><b> Data Sufficiency Questions Solution</b></h2><p>The correct answer is<strong> option 3</strong> i.e. <strong>Both Statement I and Statement II together are sufficient, but neither statement alone is sufficient.</strong></p>

<p>Statement I alone:</p>

<p>Relative speed = Y − (Y − 18) = 18 km/h</p>

<p>18 km/h = 5 m/s</p>

<p>Distance covered in 100 seconds = 5 × 100 = 500 m</p>

<p>300 + L = 500</p>

<p>L = 200 m</p>

<p>But Y is unknown.</p>

<p>Statement I is NOT sufficient.</p>

<p>Statement II alone:</p>

<p>Train R length = 200? No, L is still unknown.</p>

<p>R length = L × 125% = 5L/4</p>

<p>R speed = 120% of (Y − 18)</p>

<p>Distance covered by R in 15 seconds = 15 × 120%(Y − 18) × 5/18</p>

<p>= 5(Y − 18)</p>

<p>Total distance = 5L/4 + L/2 + 25</p>

<p>= 7L/4 + 25</p>

<p>Therefore,</p>

<p>7L/4 + 25 = 5(Y − 18)</p>

<p>There are two unknowns L and Y.</p>

<p>Statement II is NOT sufficient.</p>

<p>Statements I + II:</p>

<p>From Statement I:</p>

<p>L = 200</p>

<p>Using Statement II:</p>

<p>7 × 200/4 + 25 = 5(Y − 18)</p>

<p>350 + 25 = 5(Y − 18)</p>

<p>375 = 5(Y − 18)</p>

<p>Y − 18 = 75</p>

<p>Speed of Train Q = 75 km/h</p>

<p>Distance covered by Train Q to cross the platform = L + 175</p>

<p>= 200 + 175</p>

<p>= 375 m</p>

<p>75 km/h = 75 × 5/18 = 125/6 m/s</p>

<p>Time = 375 ÷ 125/6</p>

<p>= 375 × 6/125</p>

<p>= 18 seconds</p>
