During a filtration process, 60% of the liquid extract and 20% of the solid pulp are removed. After this process, it is observed that the total volume in the vat has decreased by 44%. Find the initial quantity of the solid pulp in the nectar.

<p>Let liquid extract = L</p>

<p>Let solid pulp = P</p>

<p>Total nectar = 150 litres</p>

<p>So,</p>

<p>L + P = 150 …… (1)</p>

<p>Removed during filtration</p>

<p>60% of liquid removed → Removed liquid = 60/100 × L = 0.6L</p>

<p>20% of pulp removed → Removed pulp = 20/100 × P = 0.2P</p>

<p>Total removed = 0.6L + 0.2P</p>

<p>Total volume decreased by 44%</p>

<p>Decrease = 44% of 150 = 44/100 × 150 = 66 litres</p>

<p>So,</p>

<p>0.6L + 0.2P = 66 ….... (Multiply by 5)</p>

<p>⇒ 3L + P = 330 …… (3)</p>

<p>Now subtract (1) from (3):</p>

<p>(3L + P) − (L + P) = 330 − 150</p>

<p>2L = 180</p>

<p>L = 90 litres</p>

<p>Put in (1):</p>

<p>90 + P = 150</p>

<p>P = 60 litres</p>
