<h2 id="content-id-8340951726-4"><b>Question On Time Speed And Distance </b></h2>A boat covers 20 km distance downstream and 16 km upstream in 6 hours where it also covers 15 km downstream and 22 km upstream in 7 hours.

I. Speed of the boat is 8 km/h

II. Total time taken by the boat to cover the total downstream distance is 3 hour 30 minutes.

<p><strong>Calculations:</strong></p>

<p>Let the speed of boat be u and speed of stream be v.</p>

<p>Downstream speed = x</p>

<p>Upstream speed = y</p>

<p>According to the question;</p>

<p>⇒ 20/x + 16/y = 6           ---- (1)</p>

<p>⇒ 15/x + 22/y = 7           ----- (2)</p>

<p>Solving both equation, we get</p>

<p>⇒ x = 10 and y = 4</p>

<p>Hence, downstream speed = u + v = 10</p>

<p>upstream speed = u - v = 4</p>

<p>we have, 2u = 14</p>

<p>⇒ u = 7 km/h</p>

<p><strong>For statement II:</strong></p>

<p>Total distance travelled downstream = 20 + 15 = 35 km</p>

<p>downstream speed = 7 + 3 = 10 km/h</p>

<p>Time taken = 35/10 = 3.5 hours or 3 hours 30 minutes.</p>
