<p>In our last blog we talked about few indoor games. Now continuing further today we will discuss about some more important indoor games like weightlifting, basketball, Swimming, Archery, Athletics. So let&#39;s get started.</p>

<h2><strong>Weightlifting</strong></h2>

<p>The origins of modern weightlifting competition are to be found in the 18th- and 19th-century. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), headquartered in Lausanne, is the international governing body for the sport of Olympic weightlifting. The World Weightlifting Championships is an event organised by the International Weightlifting Federation. The first competition, held in March 1891, was won by <strong>Edward Lawrence Levy</strong> of England.</p>

<p>Weightlifting was first introduced in the Olympics in 1896. <strong>Karnam Malleswari </strong>won a bronze medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics at Sydney, which made her the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal. Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam won the gold medal in the clean and jerk category at the World Weightlifting Championships 2021 in Tashkent. <strong>Sukhen Dey</strong> (born 28 March 1989) is an Indian Weightlifter from Howrah, West Bengal. He won Gold medal in the men’s 56 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.</p>

<h2><strong>Basketball</strong></h2>

<p>The history of basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith. A basketball team can have a lot of players, but only five can play in a game at any given time. Players in a basketball game have assigned basketball positions: centre, power forward, small forward, point guard, and shooting guard. Basketball for men was first played in the Olympics in 1936. The United States is by far the most successful country in Olympic basketball, with United States men’s teams having won 16 of 19 tournaments in which they participated. United States women’s teams have won 8 titles out of the 10 tournaments in which they competed. India’s basketball team won four gold medals and one silver medal at the South Asian Games and became the most successful team in the South Asian region. <strong>Satnam Singh </strong>became the first Indian and Sikh player to be drafted into the National Basketball Association when the Dallas Mavericks selected him.</p>

<h2><strong>Swimming</strong></h2>

<p>Swimming has been a sport at every modern Summer Olympics. It has been open to women since 1912. Swimming has the second-highest number of Olympic medals contested events after athletics. American swimmer Michael Phelps won 28 medals in the Olympics including 23 gold medals which is the highest. <strong>Sajan Prakash</strong> and <strong>Srihari Nataraj</strong> achieved direct qualification for the Tokyo Olympics, a feat never achieved by any Indian swimmer before.</p>

<p>Delhi’s <strong>Richa Mishra</strong> has as many as five Indian swimming records under her name — the most by a swimmer, be it in men’s or women’s. <strong>Masudur Rahman Baidya</strong> born in Ballabhpur was an Indian swimmer who was the world’s first physically handicapped swimmer to swim across the Strait of Gibraltar. <strong>Prasana Karmakar</strong> who hails from Kolkata is an Indian Para swimmer. He won 2 Bronze medals in 2014 Incheon Asian Games. He is also known for representing India as the swimming team coach for 2016 Rio Paralympic games.</p>

<h2><strong>Archery</strong></h2>

<p>Archery, or the use of bow and arrows, was probably developed in Africa by the later Middle Stone Age. Archery first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1900, was contested again in 1904, 1908 and 1920, then again—after an absence of 52 years—from 1972 to the present. In the Olympics competitors aim at a target from a distance of 70 metres. Deepika Kumari is an Indian professional archer. Currently ranked the World No. 1, she competes in the event of archery. She won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women’s individual recurve event. India first entered an archery team for the Summer Olympic Games in 1988, at the Seoul Summer games. Dola Banerjee represented India in the women’s individual as well as team events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.</p>

<h2><strong>Athletics</strong></h2>

<p>It is a group of all sports which includes Javelin Throw, High Jump, Walking, Steeplechase, and Marathon. Athletics has been contested at every Summer Olympics since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics. Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in men’s Javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics. India first participated at the Olympic Games in 1900, with a lone athlete Norman Pritchard winning two medals – both silver – in athletics to become the first Asian nation to win an Olympic medal. Bobby George made history when she won the bronze medal in long jump at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris. So here we have covered majorly all indoor sports which are in the limelight in the current scenario. We will move to outdoor sports now and look into the famous personalities of Indian and West Bengal sports. </p>
