<p>Australia has signed a nuclear material and secrets transfer deal with the US and UK to acquire nuclear powered submarines. The deal was signed under the AUKUS agreement. The AUKUS agreement was signed between Australia, US and UK in September 2021 to enhance trilateral security partnership. The transfer of nuclear powered submarines to Australia will be the first major initiative under AUKUS.</p>

<p>IIT Madras has been accorded with the best educational institute in the country as per the overall rankings in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). It is for the sixth time that IIT Madras topped the rankings. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was established by the Ministry of Education in 2016. </p>

<p>A new snake species namely Smithophis Mizoramensis was recently discovered by scientists from Mizoram University and Max Planck Institute. The species was discovered in Mizoram and is named after its place of discovery. The Mizo name of the species is Tuithiangrul or Mizo Brook Snake. The snake species exhibits unique colouration and scale patterns.</p>

<p>A Plastic eating Fungi was recently discovered by Scientists in Germany. The fungi is capable of breaking down synthetic plastics into simpler firms. 18 fungal strains were identified in the study out of which 4 shower a strong ability to degrade plastics. The plastic eating Fungi belongs to genera Aspergillus and Pestalotiopsis.</p>

<h2 id="content-id-1724668162674-4"><strong>cNARMADA</strong></h2>

<p>A new centre called the Centre for Narmada River Basin Management (cNARMADA) was launched by IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Indore. The major aim of the centre will be to study the Narmada river and its surrounding areas. The centre is supported by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The Centre will carry out Condition Assessment and Management Plan (CAMP) to analyse how human activities are impacting the environment. </p>

<p>A Workshop on “Standardisation for Environment and Ecology” was recently conducted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). BIS is the National Standards body of India. The BIS has also created a department dedicated to standardisation in environment and ecology namely Environment and Ecology Department (EED). </p>

<p>The Capacity Building Commission (CBC) has recently awarded an accreditation certificate as “UTKRISHT”, 3 star rating to National Institute for MSME (NI-MSME). The award is given for successful completion of the National Standards for Civil Services Training Institutions (NSCSTI) process. NI-MSME was set up in 1962 as an organisation of the Ministry of MSME.</p>

<p>A 1993 batch IAS officer Sandeep Poundrik took over charge as the Secretary, Ministry of Steel. He is from Bihar Cadre and earlier served as Additional Chief secretary in the Industries department in Government of Bihar. He also served as the Advisor in the National Disaster Management Authority under the Ministry of Home Affairs.</p>

<p>In order to commemorate the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, the government of India has declared August 23 as “National Space Day”. The Chandrayaan 3 mission accomplished safe and soft landing of the Vikram lander and deployment of Pragyaan rover on the lunar South surface. </p>

<p>Tokyo Olympics Gold Medallist, India’s Pramod Bhagat was suspended for 18 months after being found guilty of breaching Badminton World Federation (BWF) anti doping regulations. He is set to miss Paris Paralympics 2024. </p>
